How Shopify ERP integration works across the whole operation
How Shopify ERP workflows connect products, orders, fulfilment, returns, payments and finance.

A Shopify ERP integration needs rules for where data begins, which system owns it and what happens when a record cannot move. Those rules cover orders, inventory, fulfilment, returns and finance.
Commerce
Products, customers, orders, discounts, taxes and payment events originate in Shopify.
Operations
NetSuite, a WMS or ShipStation routes fulfilment, records inventory movement and returns tracking.
Finance
Deposits, refunds, fees and settlements are validated against the transactions that produced them.
Decide which system owns each record
Before mapping fields, decide which system is the source of truth for products, prices, customers, inventory and fulfilment. A value that can be edited in both Shopify and the ERP needs a clear conflict rule. Without one, the integration can move data perfectly and still produce an incorrect result.
Orders are only the first transaction
A paid Shopify order may become a NetSuite Sales Order with a Customer Deposit. If fulfilment runs through NetSuite, a WMS or ShipStation, shipping produces the Item Fulfilment and the accounting process can bill the order and apply the deposit. Other operating models may use Cash Sales instead. The correct record path depends on when payment is captured, who fulfils the order and how finance recognizes the sale.
Returns need an operational and financial path
A physical return can involve a Return Authorization, Item Receipt and Credit Memo before a Customer Refund is issued. The storefront also needs the correct refund status. Treating this as one generic refund event hides inventory, timing and accounting decisions that matter later.
The bank deposit is part of the integration
Moving an order into the ERP does not prove that the eventual payout matches the related deposits, refunds and fees. Reconciliation should identify missing or inconsistent records before creating the NetSuite bank deposit. When an exception is corrected, the workflow can re-evaluate the payout and post automatically only after the checks pass.
Choose an integration you can monitor and maintain
A standard connector is often the right foundation for conventional data flows. It can be extended when the core movement works but an operational or finance layer is missing. A custom integration becomes more sensible when the business has distinct workflows, several stores, unusual mappings or needs direct control over retries, monitoring and support.
Whichever approach you choose, someone needs to see what moved, what failed and what must happen next across the entire order lifecycle.
